First Date Blunders

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and when it comes to first dates, impression is everything. When you really like someone and have waited for your first date, you want to make sure things flow smoothly.

Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes, first dates go bad - really bad.  But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the relationship is doomed to failure. Many couples get past the hurdle of a bad first date and make it to the finish line.  However, avoiding certain situations or circumstances that could cause your first date to be less than you expected may be a wise strategy.  Here are some common situations that often lead to first date blunders.

First, you should really consider whether or not you want to go out to eat on your first date. If you do, order something light.  Spaghetti is not a good choice for a first date.  Many people have a hard time eating spaghetti without making a mess, and it can be embarrassing to spend the remainder of your first date with sauce on your clothes.  Lobster and other seafood offer many difficulties as well. You should feel very comfortable with someone before choosing to wear a bib in his or her presence.  This usually isn’t recommended for the first date.

Next, you should never bring your first date to a location that you frequented with a former partner. Going to the club where everyone knows you and your ex is not a wise move.   Also, you should avoid going places where you are likely to run into your ex or even friends. It is important that all new relationships have a fresh start and the best way to begin a new relationship is by making the time to get to know each other without any interference.

A big first date blunder that many people understandably make, is trying too hard.  The danger of trying too hard to impress your date is that you may begin to act like someone you aren’t.  Yes, you never get a second chance to make that first impression, but you want the impression to be a reflection of your character.  When people begin to act like someone they are not, they are setting themselves up for a big fall.  No matter how nervous, anxious, or excited you are about your date, just be yourself.

Also, be upfront.  Another big mistake that people make on the first date is ending it on the wrong note.  If you had a great time, enjoyed yourself immensely, and would like to go on a second date, then be upfront.  Your date isn’t a mind reader, and if you act as though you aren’t interested because you read that advice in the latest magazine, don’t act surprised if the phone doesn’t ring.  Your behavior is the only indication your date has whether or not you had a great time.  If you had fun, let the other person know. The biggest first date blunder of all is missing the second date because you didn’t let the other person know that you were interested.
